So, on March 30, 1867, the Lindell Hotel, one of the largest hotels in the world, burned to the ground. According to accounts, tens of thousands of people flocked to watch the spectacle! Some man called Henry Shaw used the“ancient ruins” from the hotel for a park he was creating – you can see the black soot marks on the stones.
Apparently they built a second hotel (!) by the same name, on the same site, at 6th and Washington in 1874. It was just as lavish as its predecessor (although I bet it was no Hogwarts Castle!) and it met the same fate: in 1885, fire struck once again, burning the hotel to the ground!
